Herricks Model UN is one of our school’s biggest clubs, and home to 170 delegates. The Model UN group has seen one of its most successful years yet and has displayed great resiliency after returning from the pandemic. Delegates had the opportunity to attend two collegiate level conferences this year: BUSUN, hosted by Brown University Model UN, and CMUNCE, hosted by Columbia University Model UN. In addition, they attended three high school level conferences: HOMMUNC, hosted by Horace Mann, STUYMUNC, hosted by Stuyvesant High School, and lastly an international conference: NHSMUN. NHSMUN is the world’s largest and most prestigious conference for high school students across the globe. Delegates prepared for this three day conference in NYC The Model UN team won the ‘Award for Excellence in Research and Preparation’, and in addition to winning a delegation award, and many of Herricks delegates won awards for their achievements in individual committees. This was the first year where our club has received recognition from this international conference.
Behind every conference that we attended were board members and advisors who worked hard to ensure that our delegates were not only prepared for these conferences but that they were confident in their abilities. The Herricks Model UN Club has never emphasized the importance of winning awards, rather they believe that it's important for high school students to develop skills past public speaking with every conference and club meeting that they attend, such as: good work ethic (keeping up with research on their position), self-confidence (through the mentee program where a board member is matched to a club member and meant to provide advice and encouragement), responsibility (through the responsibility they have of attending the training sessions held), writing skills (through the Position Papers that each delegate is required to write for a conference), and so much more.
